Location, history, population Tarusa is one of the regional centers of the Kaluga Region. Tarusa is located 135 km from Moscow on the north bank of the Oka river. Founded in the 13th century, it is one of Russia's oldest cities and is a cultural centre of national importance. Many famous poets, writers, artists, musicians, such as Marina Tsvetaeva, Nikolay Zabolotski, Konstantin Paustovski, Viktor Borisov-Musatov, Konstantin Korovin, Nikolai Krymov, and Svyatoslav Richer, lived in Tarusa. The current population of Tarusa District is 16,000, of whom 10,000 live in the town of Tarusa. However, Tarusa's significance is far greater than its population would suggest: the town is very popular among the Moscow intelligentsia, and its life consequently tends to attract nationwide attention.
Tarusa Hospital
The hospital is located in the town centre at 16 Liebknecht Street.
It has 135 hospital beds. Medical services are covered by six departments: therapy, surgery, obstetrics, pediatrics, infectious diseases, and gynecology. The hospital also operates two doctor-led ambulatory clinics (located in Voznesenie and Lopatino) and seven paramedic-midwife stations. The hospital has an x-ray machine, gastroscope, laparoscope, and a clinical and biochemical laboratory. The hospital's managing director since 2002 is Dr. Irina V. Oleynikova. Of the hospital's 40 staff physician openings, only 24 are currently occupied, and of 130 required nurses - only 98 are employed. Many physicians are over 60 years old. The hospital's major difficulties are: the lack of physicians and the lack of modern equipment.
